The Washing Machine
Jan 5-15, 2012 at the Next Stage Theatre Festival
Ghostly spirits, modern machines, and untouchables collide in this new play about an Anglo-Indian woman’s attempt to wash away the stains of her past.
After a successful showing at Nightwood Theatre's Groundswell Festival of New Work, director Sasha Kovacs joins playwright Radha Menon (writer of award-winning screenplay Max Neo) to assemble a team as multi-cultural as it is multi-generational, with performers including Dora-award winner Steve Cumyn, Ronica Sajnani (of Deepa Mehta’s Water), Cydney Penner (of BLOOM, Toronto Fringe 2011), and Aparajit Bhattacharjee (of The Sheep & the Whale, Modern Times/Cahoots).
In The Washing Machine, Isabelle returns from England to her childhood home in India after the death of her husband and child. She has big plans for this banana plantation: out with the sacred grounds, in with tennis courts and a fancy new washing machine! Isabelle and her lustful brother James clash with their superstitious servants, a neighbouring convent, and the wrath of an Aghori guru as her family’s dark secret is finally exposed.
